vocaloid
reality: A vocal synth software/instrument developed by Yamaha. Designed to be a "singer in a box", it was meant for musicians who did not have a vocalist on hand, could not sing, did not have the range or as a backup singer. Although the original vocaloids released were from the UK, the software picked up speed with the release of the (now outdated) Hatsune Miku, the third japanese vocaloid. Vocaloid spread as a creative outlet/subculture for musicians, human singers, artists, programmers, animators, dancers and fans. There are currently over 30 vocaloids, all with different ranges and voices; like the deep voiced Big Al, opera based Prima and Tonio, and the soft, childish Kaai Yuki. There are over 40 thousand songs made by people using the vocaloid software, and some of the producers have been able to make it into the mainstream music industry, like Ryo and his band Supercell. Human singers, such as Piko and Choucho, have also been able to get into the industry after being noticed singing their versions of vocaloid tunes. With the help of Sega and 5pb and permission of the producers, there have been several concerts with the more popular songs using Crypton vocaloids as projections on a giant screen and a live, human band in the back (some of the songs even had the original producers in that band, such as Oster Project).
